Medicare Checklist for Cincinnati Residents
A solid Medicare choice starts with solid information. Most of the mix-ups we see in Cincinnati come down to one missing piece: a prescription left off a list, a specialist nobody mentioned, or an HR letter that never got requested.
Work through this Medicare checklist before you compare plans. It takes about twenty minutes, and it's the same list we walk through with clients from Hyde Park to Green Township.
- What to pull together before you compare plans
- Deadlines you don't want to miss
- Questions worth asking any Medicare agent

Step 1
Pull your paperwork together
Documents to have within reach
- Your red, white and blue Medicare card (or Social Security confirmation letter)
- Your current insurance card and plan name, if you're covered today
- Any Annual Notice of Change letter your plan mailed this fall
- A creditable coverage letter from an employer, TRICARE or the VA
- A rough household income figure, in case you qualify for Extra Help
Step 2
Write down what you actually use
Doctors and hospital system
List your primary care doctor, every specialist, and which system you'd rather stay with, whether that's The Christ Hospital or TriHealth Good Samaritan.
Prescriptions
Exact drug names, dosages, how often you take them, and your pharmacy. Snap a photo of the bottles if that's quicker.
Care you expect this year
A scheduled surgery, ongoing physical therapy or regular labs should all factor into which plan makes sense.
Step 3
Mark your dates
Dates worth circling on the calendar
- Your 65th birthday and the 7-month Initial Enrollment Period around it
- The date Part B starts, since it opens your 6-month Medigap window
- October 15 to December 7 for Annual Open Enrollment
- January 1 to March 31 if you're enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan
- Your last day of active employment, if you're delaying Part B
Not sure which window fits your situation?
Read Turning 65 if you're new to Medicare, or Switch Your Plan if you're already enrolled.
Step 4
Questions to ask any Medicare agent
A licensed independent agent should answer every one of these without stalling: Which carriers are you appointed to sell? Are my doctors in-network on this exact plan for next year? What will each of my prescriptions cost under this plan's formulary? What's my total expected cost for the year, not just the monthly premium? What happens if I need to change plans later?
If the answers feel vague, keep asking around. Read how we work or start with our Medicare FAQs.

Bring what you've gathered and we'll line up the Medicare plans we represent in Hamilton County, then explain which ones actually fit your doctors and prescriptions.
