Medicare Plans
Medicare Supplement (Medigap) Plans for Cincinnati Residents
Original Medicare covers most of your hospital and doctor bills, but not the whole thing. A Medicare Supplement plan, usually called Medigap, fills in the deductibles, coinsurance, and copays Medicare doesn't touch, so your yearly spending stays close to fixed.
Medigap plans are standardized by letter, so a Plan G from one carrier pays the exact same benefits as a Plan G from another. What actually differs is price, service, and how each company handles rate hikes down the road.
- Keep any doctor who takes Medicare
- Predictable monthly premium, few surprises
- No referrals and no provider network
- Travel coverage anywhere in the U.S.

How it works
Medicare pays first, Medigap picks up what's left
Original Medicare (Part A and Part B) stays your primary coverage. Whether you visit The Christ Hospital, TriHealth Good Samaritan, or a clinic in Clifton or Montgomery that takes Medicare, the claim goes to Medicare first. Whatever's left over routes straight to your Medigap carrier, and most members never see a bill past the annual Part B deductible.
Since there's no network, you never have to wonder if a specialist is "in plan." If they take Medicare, you're covered, whether that's in Mount Lookout, on a trip to Loveland, or on a flight out of CVG to see family for the winter. Medigap skips drug coverage entirely, so most people pair it with a standalone Part D drug plan.
Compare
Plan G, Plan N, and High-Deductible Plan G side by side
| Plan | Monthly premium | What you pay | Best suited for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Plan G | Highest of the three | Only the annual Part B deductible | People who want the fewest bills and the most predictable year |
| Plan N | Moderate | Part B deductible, small office and ER copays, possible excess charges | Healthy members who see doctors occasionally and want a lower premium |
| High-Deductible Plan G | Lowest | Full Plan G benefits after you meet a high annual deductible | Budget-focused members comfortable with more risk in a bad year |
Premiums climb every year, the coverage doesn't
Medigap benefits are locked in by law, so a rising rate is the only thing to watch for. We re-shop your Plan G or Plan N every year so you're not paying extra just for staying put.
Medications aren't part of Medigap
You'll want a separate Part D plan. Going without one when you're first eligible can mean a penalty that follows you for life.
Timing
Your open enrollment window is the most important date on this page
For six months starting the month your Part B begins, you can buy any Medigap plan sold in Ohio with zero health questions asked. That window is the only time a diagnosis can't raise your rate or get your application turned down.
Once it closes, Ohio carriers can medically underwrite new applicants. Most people still qualify, but things like a recent cardiac procedure, oxygen use, or insulin-dependent diabetes can limit your choices. If you're turning 65, start talking to us about three months ahead of time.
- Six-month guaranteed-issue window starts with Part B
- No network, no referrals, no annual plan shopping
- Guaranteed renewable as long as you pay the premium
- Special guaranteed-issue rights apply if a plan leaves your area

Who tends to pick Medigap around Cincinnati
You see several specialists
Cardiology, oncology, or orthopedic visits pile up fast under a copay structure. Medigap keeps that spending flat all year. You want a known monthly number
A higher fixed premium beats an unpredictable out-of-pocket cap for a lot of retirees living on Social Security and a pension. You travel or snowbird
Coverage follows you anywhere in the U.S. that takes Medicare, with no out-of-network worries whether you're driving I-75 or flying out of CVG.
If a lower monthly bill and built-in dental or fitness perks matter more to you, weigh this against Medicare Advantage in Cincinnati before you decide.
Underwriting
Applying outside a protected enrollment period
Inside your six-month Medigap window, or when a guaranteed-issue right applies, health questions don't come up. Outside those periods, Ohio carriers can underwrite: they'll ask about diagnoses, procedures, medications, and any pending tests, and they can decline the application or charge more.
Guaranteed-issue rights kick in for specific situations: your Advantage plan leaves the service area, an employer group plan ends, a carrier misled you, or you're within the 12-month trial right after first joining an Advantage plan at 65. Those windows are narrow and easy to miss, which is why we ask about your health history before we start an application, not after it gets declined.
If underwriting looks like it'll be a problem, we tell you up front and look at Medicare Advantage instead of letting a decline show up on your record.
Rates
Rate increases, travel, and the yearly checkup
How Medigap rates move
Benefits are fixed by law, so price is the only lever. Ohio carriers usually price by attained age, meaning your premium climbs as you get older and again whenever the carrier files a general rate increase. Two companies selling the same Plan G can end up far apart in price after five years.
We check your premium every year against the other carriers we represent. Switching usually means passing underwriting again, so it's a move to make while you're healthy, not after a diagnosis lands.
Travel and access
Backed by Original Medicare, Medigap works with any provider nationwide who accepts Medicare. No out-of-area rule, no referral, and nothing to check before seeing a specialist in Sharonville, Warren County, or clear across the country.
Some Medigap plans include a limited foreign travel emergency benefit. It's capped and carries a deductible, useful, but not a stand-in for real travel medical insurance on a long trip overseas.
