Medicare Annual Open Enrollment in Cincinnati, OH
Annual Open Enrollment, often shortened to AEP, is the one window each year when almost anyone on Medicare can change plans without meeting any special condition. It runs from October 15 to December 7, and whatever you land on takes effect January 1.
It's also mailer season, TV ad season, and unwanted phone call season. Our advice: tune out the noise, pull up your own drug list and doctors, and make one clear-headed decision.
- October 15 through December 7 every year
- Whatever you pick starts January 1
- Check your drug list and your network first
- Free plan reviews for seniors across Hamilton County

What's allowed
Changes on the table during AEP
- Move from Original Medicare into a Medicare Advantage plan
- Move from a Medicare Advantage plan back to Original Medicare
- Swap one Medicare Advantage plan for another
- Join, drop, or change a standalone Part D drug plan
Medigap runs on its own clock
Medicare Supplement plans sit outside AEP entirely. In Ohio you can apply for a Medigap plan at any point, but once your one-time open enrollment window closes, the carrier can ask health questions.
Prepare
A short review beats a long slog
Open your Annual Notice of Change
Your plan mails this every September. It spells out next year's premium, copays, drug tiers, and network changes in one place.
Refresh your prescription list
Doses shift, new drugs get added. Bring the current version. This is the single biggest lever on your cost.
Check your doctors and hospital
Confirm The Christ Hospital, TriHealth, or your primary care clinic against next year's directory, not this year's.
Decide before Thanksgiving
December 7 is a hard cutoff. Applications filed in the last few days leave no room to fix a mistake.
Other windows
What happens if you miss December 7
Advantage members get a second shot from January 1 to March 31 to make one change, either to a different Advantage plan or back to Original Medicare paired with a Part D plan. Outside that stretch, you'd need a Special Enrollment Period tied to something like moving out of a plan's service area or losing coverage through an employer, a situation we see often among retirees from P&G, Kroger, and GE Aerospace in Evendale.
Brand new to Medicare? Your Initial Enrollment Period around turning 65 applies instead. Not sure which window you're in? See switching your plan.
